Ten-Thousand Dollar
LJ is a talented but broke photographer in Baltimore who is desperate for a big break. He signs up with a mysterious firm, "Supernatural Success," run by the enigmatic Drac, which offers him lucrative but bizarre and dangerous jobs. His first assignment involves filming a manor owned by a polite vegan zombie, which quickly escalates to his next job: an off-world corporate shoot for an alien CEO aboard a starship. LJ must navigate these surreal and perilous situations, using his wit and camera skills to survive and, hopefully, get rich.
LJ's desperation evaporates when Drac dangles a $10,000 estate walkthrough gig—a sum that could transform his struggling photography career overnight. Without hesitation, LJ signs the digital NDA and races to his car, already mentally spending the money on professional gear and dreaming of his comeback. In a shadowy office hidden from view, Drac and the Mysterious Man reveal slightly there intentions: LJ is bait, deliberately selected because his poverty has made him blind to the danger. The skeletal figure leans closer, his unnaturally long fingers flexing as he instructs Drac to send LJ to Blackwood Manor, whispering that they will taste LJ's blood type themselves when he arrives—but only after they prepare him.

Panel 1:A sleek, modern smartphone screen glows in dim light, displaying an email notification. The sender is "DRAC" with a subject line reading "Reed Manor - Photography Contract." The screen casts a pale blue glow onto an unseen face in the darkness.
Narrator:“The call came through instantly.”
Panel 2:A phone call interface fills the screen. The caller ID displays only a name: "DRAC." The number is blocked. Ominous static crackles audibly from the speaker.
Narrator:“No introduction. Just business.”
Panel 3:LJ sits on the edge of his bed in a cramped apartment, phone pressed to his ear. His expression shifts from curiosity to confusion. His dreadlocks fall across his forehead as he tilts his head, listening intently. The room is sparse—a small desk, a window with thin curtains, the bare essentials of a broke artist's life.
“Drac: LJ. I have a job for you. Reed Manor. Three days. You available? LJ: Reed Manor? Uh... yeah. Yeah, I'm available.”
Panel 4:A close-up of LJ's face, eyes widened with a mix of alarm and intrigue. His mouth opens slightly as he processes the strange question. Beads of sweat form on his forehead.
“LJ: How much are we talking?”
Panel 5:The phone screen flickers with digital static. A shadow moves across it—formless, undefined. The audio crackles with an unsettling silence.
“Drac: $10,000. Half now. Half on completion. Your work gets what we need, you'll get more jobs after this.”
Narrator:“A long, cold silence stretched between them.”
Panel 6:LJ leans forward on his bed, elbows on his knees, the phone still pressed to his ear. His expression has shifted from alarm to cautious interest. His camera bag sits on the floor nearby, a constant companion.
“Drac: The estate is occupied. The owner is... selective about visitors. In and out. No extended stays. Understood? LJ: In and out. Got it. When do I start?”
PAGE 2
Panel 1:LJ sits upright now, one hand gripping the edge of the mattress. His eyes are bright with interest. The camera captures the moment his desperation begins to override his caution.
“Drac: Tomorrow morning. Six AM. Don't be late.”
Panel 2:A wide shot of the small apartment. LJ stands now, pacing slightly, phone to his ear. His body language shows growing excitement. The window behind him reflects the city lights of Baltimore at night.
“Drac: $5,000. Cash upfront.”
Narrator:“Ten grand. His first real job.”
Panel 3:An extreme close-up of LJ's face. His voice cracks audibly. His eyes widen with shock and hunger. The phone is barely visible at the edge of the frame.
“LJ: Ten bands. Ten grand total. That's... that's huge.”
Panel 4:The phone screen glitches and flickers. Digital static swirls across the display. The voice on the other end carries an edge of dark amusement.
“LJ: I can actually upgrade my setup now. Maybe a Sony FX5 and some Cooke lenses...”
Panel 5:LJ's face fills the panel. He is stunned, mouth slightly open, eyes locked forward. His hand trembles slightly as he holds the phone. This is the moment that will change everything.
“LJ: This is the start, man. This is actually the start!”
Panel 6:LJ's apartment. He stands frozen, processing the words. Behind him, on a small desk, his laptop screen glows. His camera bag sits on the floor, waiting.
“Drac: But there are conditions. An NDA. Strict confidentiality. LJ: Of course. I don't even know who you are.”
Narrator:“He had no idea what was waiting for him at Reed Manor.”
PAGE 3
Panel 1:A close-up of LJ's face. His eyes are wide, his breathing shallow. He exhales the word like a prayer.
“LJ: Don't be late. Got it. See you at six AM.”
Panel 2:LJ's laptop screen displays his email inbox. A new message from "DRAC" appears at the top, subject: "Reed Manor - Address & Contract." The timestamp shows the email arrived seconds ago.
Narrator:“The email arrived before he hung up.”
Panel 3:LJ's hand moves across the laptop trackpad. His finger hovers over the link embedded in the email. The cursor is positioned over a blue hyperlink labeled "Accept Contract."
Panel 4:A close-up of the phone screen. Drac's voice carries one final warning, his tone shifting slightly—less smooth, more predatory.
“Drac: One more thing. Bring all your equipment. Whatever you bring, we need comprehensive coverage.”
Panel 5:LJ stands in his apartment, phone still pressed to his ear, but Drac has hung up. The line is dead. LJ stares at the phone, processing the words. A chill runs down his spine, but he shakes it off.
Narrator:“Comprehensive coverage. What did that mean?”
Panel 6:LJ's face. His expression hardens. The brief moment of doubt passes. Ambition and desperation win. He nods to himself, a decision made.
Narrator:“He didn't ask. He just said yes.”
PAGE 4
Panel 1:A vast, decaying auditorium interior. The camera pulls back to reveal a cathedral of ruin: a shattered oculus pierces the center of a gilded dome, casting harsh volumetric shafts of daylight down like interrogation spotlights. Suspended from the breach is an immense crystal chandelier, choked with dust and dead vines, hanging like a sword of Damocles over the flooded orchestra floor below. Long, skeletal roots drape down like nooses, swaying in the drafty air. The entire space reeks of abandoned grandeur weaponized by a predatory mind.
Narrator:“Somewhere in the city, in an office hidden from view...”
Panel 2:A close-up of a wall of monitors, each displaying a different angle of LJ's apartment. One shows his bed, another his desk, a third the window. Thermal imaging, night vision, and standard camera feeds bleed across the screens in a mosaic of surveillance. The light from the monitors casts an eerie glow across the shadowed space.
Panel 3:Drac sits at a control desk, his face obscured by shadow and digital static. Only his silhouette is visible—a sharp profile, a suit jacket, his hand moving to end the call on a sleek, futuristic interface. His presence is felt rather than seen.
“Drac: The photographer is secured. He'll be there tomorrow morning.”
Panel 4:A tall, skeletal figure emerges from the shadows behind Drac. This is the Mysterious Man. His silhouette is impossibly thin, his fingers unnaturally long and spindly. He wears a dark, old-fashioned suit that hangs off his bony frame like rags on a scarecrow. His face remains obscured—kept in shadow, a mystery. He steps forward with predatory grace, his presence filling the space with malevolent hunger.
Panel 5:A close-up of the Mysterious Man's elongated shadow cast across the control desk. His spindly fingers stretch impossibly long across the surface, moving in a deliberate, almost purposeful gesture. Only his outline is visible—no face, no features, only the predatory shape. He does not speak.
Panel 6:Drac turns slightly in his chair, his face still obscured by darkness. His silhouette suggests a cold smile.
“Drac: He's desperate enough to ignore every red flag I waved. That's how you know he's the right fit.”
Narrator:“Two predators in the dark. One client. One unknown.”
PAGE 5
Panel 1:The Mysterious Man's silhouette tilts back. His long fingers curl into claws and flex slowly, deliberately—a gesture of anticipation, hunger, satisfaction. Though his face remains hidden, his entire posture radiates dark amusement. He does not speak.
Panel 2:Drac's hand moves across the control interface. Holographic displays flicker to life, showing coordinates, satellite imagery of a Gothic manor surrounded by storm clouds, and a file labeled "LJ - Photographer - Target Profile." His shadow moves across the screens.
“Drac: Send the coordinates to Reed Manor.”
Panel 3:A close-up of the satellite imagery on the screens. Reed Manor is visible—a sprawling estate crowned with jagged spires and wreathed in dark storm clouds. The coordinates blink in red text below.
Panel 4:The Mysterious Man leans closer to Drac, his skeletal frame bending forward. His spindly fingers point at the satellite image of Reed Manor. His face remains in absolute shadow—a void where features should be. He taps the screen once, expectantly.
Panel 5:Drac's silhouette turns to face the Mysterious Man. The two predators regard each other in the darkness, the monitors casting their shadows back and forth across the walls like a dance of hunters.
“Drac: Reed Manor is ready. Everything is prepared. He arrives at dawn.”
Panel 6:A wide shot of the Shadow Office. The wall of monitors dominates the foreground, each screen displaying a different angle of surveillance. The shattered oculus looms above, casting its interrogation spotlight down. Drac and the Mysterious Man stand silhouetted against the monitors, two shadows plotting in the dark.
Narrator:“The stage was set. The photographer didn't know what he was walking into.”
PAGE 6
Panel 1:A wide establishing shot of LJ's driveway in Baltimore during the pre-dawn darkness. The Red Brick Rowhouse stands prominently in the right foreground—a three-to-four-story Victorian with dark red brick, ornate brick trim, and a prominent arched window frame on the second floor. The ground floor windows are boarded up with unpainted plywood, some covered in graffiti including the number "433." The architectural overhang is destroyed, exposing rotting wood beams and hanging debris. Debris is piled on the ground below. Across the street, weathered rowhouses with heavy gray corrugated metal security shutters line the block. The street is a red brick plaza heavily neglected, with large sections missing or covered with rough concrete patches. Tall industrial streetlights line both sides. In the distance, a modern concrete high-rise apartment building stands under a dim, pre-dawn sky. The sun hasn't risen yet—everything is bathed in twilight blue.
Panel 2:LJ's beat-up car sits in the driveway, its trunk open wide. The vehicle is old, worn, and barely holding together—rust spots visible on the panels, the paint faded and chipped. LJ stands beside the open trunk, loading camera gear bags into the vehicle. His movements are frantic, energetic. He wears practical streetwear—a hoodie, worn jeans, and sneakers. His camera bag is slung over his shoulder. His eyes are tired—he barely slept.
Panel 3:A close-up of LJ's face as he loads the final gear bag into the trunk. His expression is radiant—eyes wide with hope, a genuine smile spreading across his face. Sweat beads on his forehead from the excitement and exertion. This is the moment before everything changes.
“LJ: Six AM. Six. AM. Don't be late.”
Panel 4:LJ stands with his hands on his hips, looking at the loaded car with pride. His chest puffs out slightly. Behind him, the decaying rowhouse stands as a stark reminder of his current poverty. The contrast between his joy and his surroundings is palpable.
“LJ: Ten grand. First real gig. You got this, LJ.”
Panel 5:LJ throws his fist up in the air in a victory gesture. His whole body radiates triumph and ambition. The camera captures the moment of pure elation—a young man on the edge of what he believes will be his breakthrough.
“LJ: You absolutely got this.”
Panel 6:LJ slams the trunk shut with finality. The sound echoes off the decaying buildings around him. He moves toward the driver's side door, his body language electric with anticipation. The car is packed. He is ready. He has no idea what awaits him.
Narrator:“He slammed the trunk shut and checked the time. 5:47 AM. Thirteen minutes to get across the city.”
PAGE 7
Panel 1:LJ's beat-up car accelerates down the street, tires squealing slightly. The vehicle pulls away from the curb with urgency. Behind it, the decaying rowhouses blur into the background. The car is heading toward the edge of the city, toward the coordinates waiting in LJ's email—toward the Blackwood Manor .
Narrator:“He made it in eight.”
Panel 2:A close-up of LJ's hands gripping the steering wheel. His knuckles are white with tension, but his face (visible in the rearview mirror) is still smiling. The city blurs past the windows.
Narrator:“Ten grand. That was real money.”
Panel 3:The car speeds through Baltimore streets, passing boarded-up storefronts, abandoned buildings, and weathered brick facades. The urban landscape is a tapestry of decay and abandonment. The bright morning sunlight casts harsh shadows between the buildings.
Narrator:“Real money meant real opportunity.”
Panel 4:A split-panel composition: on the left side, LJ's face is visible through the car window, eyes fixed forward on the road ahead, his expression determined. On the right side, the landscape begins to shift—the urban decay starts to thin out, giving way to overgrown fields and darker, more isolated terrain. The contrast between the city and what lies ahead is stark.
Narrator:“As he drove, the city landscape shifted beneath him.”
Panel 5:A wide shot of the car driving toward the horizon. The landscape around it has changed dramatically. Urban decay has given way to overgrown fields, bare trees, and a darkening sky. In the distance, storm clouds begin to gather. The car is a small speck heading toward an unknown destination.
Narrator:“Urban sprawl gave way to older neighborhoods. Older neighborhoods became estate country.”
Panel 6:A close-up of the car 's dashboard GPS screen. The coordinates are displayed: "Blackwood Manor - 15 miles." The route winds through rural roads and forest. A red pin marks the destination—the manor, waiting in the darkness ahead.
Narrator:“The coordinates on his phone blinked: Reed Manor. Destination approaching.”
PAGE 8
Panel 1:The car continues down a winding rural road. The landscape is increasingly desolate—sparse trees, overgrown grass, and a road that seems to lead nowhere. The sky above is darkening, storm clouds churning. The sunlight is fading, replaced by a more ominous gray light.
Narrator:“The landscape grew darker. Storm clouds gathering.”
Panel 2:A close-up of LJ's face as he drives. His expression has shifted slightly—the initial triumph is fading, replaced by a growing sense of unease. His eyes narrow as he focuses on the road ahead. The darkness is encroaching.
Narrator:“Something felt off about this place.”
Panel 3:The car slows as it approaches a massive wrought-iron fence partially obscured by skeletal, bare branches of dying trees. The fence is tarnished and twisted. Beyond the fence, barely visible through the gloom, is the silhouette of Reed Manor—a sprawling estate crowned with jagged spires and wreathed in dark storm clouds. The manor looms like a predator waiting for prey.
Panel 4:LJ's car pulls to a stop at the manor gates. The engine idles. LJ sits in the driver's seat, hands still gripping the wheel, staring up at the manor. His face is visible in profile, his expression a mixture of awe and creeping unease. The manor towers above him, its dark stone facade stained with soot and water marks, its windows mostly dark except for a cluster of windows on the middle-right tier that glow with a warm, dim orange light—the only sign of activity. He checks his phone: 5:59 AM. Right on time.
Panel 5:A wide shot of Reed Manor. The full scope of its Gothic grandeur is revealed—a massive, multi-tiered stone estate with an imposing asymmetrical design. Steep, towering mansard roofs are crowned with intricate wrought-iron cresting that looks like rows of jagged teeth. Slender, decorative metal spires and lightning rods extend upward from the highest peaks, anchored by prominent brick and stone chimneys. The masonry is constructed from heavy, rough-hewn blocks of dark, weathered stone. A recessed, arcaded porch supported by heavy stone pillars leads to a dark, shadowed entryway. A short set of wide stone steps descends into the unkempt yard. The grounds are a neglected plot of dead, yellowing grass and patchy earth. A thick blanket of churning, dark gray storm clouds hangs low over the estate, enveloping the entire scene in cold, atmospheric gloom.
Narrator:“Reed Manor. It looked exactly like what a creepy Victorian estate should look like.”
Panel 6:A close-up of LJ's face as he sits in the car , staring at the manor. His expression is unreadable—fear, ambition, and uncertainty warring behind his eyes. His hand moves toward the door handle. He is about to step out. He is about to cross the threshold.
Narrator:“He was actually getting paid to go inside it.”
PAGE 9
Panel 1:LJ's car door opens. He steps out, one foot touching the dead grass of the manor grounds. His camera bag is slung over his shoulder. The wind is picking up, rustling through the bare branches of the dying tree. The manor looms above him, impossibly tall and forbidding. He takes a deep breath.
Panel 2:LJ stands fully out of the car now, feet planted on the dead grass. His eyes scan the manor facade, taking in every detail. His photographer's eye is assessing, cataloging, analyzing. The wind whips his dreadlocks across his face. His jaw tightens slightly—there's something about this place. Something he can't quite name.
Panel 3:A close-up of LJ's hand as he reaches for his camera bag and pulls out a professional camera. His fingers are steady, practiced. This is what he does. This is who he is. A photographer. A creator. But today, something is different. Today, he is prey.
Narrator:“This was the job. Just the job.”
Panel 4:LJ raises the camera to his eye. Through the viewfinder, the manor is framed—a perfect composition of Gothic menace. The windows glow with that strange orange light. The spires reach toward the churning sky like accusatory fingers.
Narrator:“Document everything. Comprehensive coverage. Get paid. Move on.”
Panel 5:A wide shot of LJ standing in the manor grounds, camera already in his hands, the manor filling the frame behind him. He is a small figure dwarfed by the Gothic architecture. The wind whips around him. The storm clouds churn overhead. This is the moment—the threshold between his old life and whatever comes next. He looks like he belongs here. Or he will, in about three seconds of professional work.
Panel 6:LJ stands at the manor entrance, phone pressed to his ear. His camera bag sits at his feet. The manor doors loom behind him. His face shows uncertainty—excitement mixed with genuine fear. The storm clouds churn overhead.
“LJ: Hey... Drac? I'm here. At the manor. Drac: I know. You're twelve minutes early. Good.”
Narrator:“He had a job to do. Nothing more.”
Panel 7:A close-up of LJ's face. His jaw is tight, his eyes darting between the manor entrance and the dead landscape around him. He speaks quietly into the phone, his voice uncertain.
“LJ: This place is... look, it's pretty intense. Dark. Real dark. Are you sure the owner is actually here? Drac: He's waiting for you. Go inside. Take your shots. In and out, remember?”
Panel 8:LJ's hand trembles slightly as he grips the phone. His other hand grips his camera bag strap. He glances back at his car, then at the manor door.
“LJ: This place is... look, it's pretty intense. Dark. Real dark. Are you sure the owner is actually here? Drac: He won't be. You'll be alone. There's a keypad on the east entrance. Code is 7-3-1-4. After you enter, you have three hours. Not four. Three.”
Panel 9:A close-up of LJ's face. He pulls the phone back from his ear slightly, shocked by the abruptness of Drac's response.
“LJ: Wait—the owner won't be here? So I'm just... going in there alone? Drac: That's the job. Document everything. Every room. Every angle. That's why I'm paying you ten grand.”
Panel 10:LJ's phone screen lights up. A notification appears: "Transfer Received: $5,000 from DRAC INVESTMENTS." The money has hit his account. LJ sees it and his expression shifts—shock, then gratitude, then resignation. The doubt melts away, replaced by necessity.
Panel 11:LJ stares at the phone notification, then back at the manor entrance. His hand unconsciously goes to his camera bag. The fear hasn't gone away, but the money has made the decision for him.
“Drac: Half is in your account now. The other half when you're done. Think of it as security.”
Panel 12:A close-up of LJ's face. He takes a deep breath, steeling himself. His expression hardens with determination. Fear still flickers in his eyes, but ambition and practical necessity have won. He looks directly at the manor entrance.
“LJ: Alright. I got this. I'll get you what you need. Drac: I know you will. Call me when you're done.”
PAGE 10
Panel 1:LJ hangs up the phone and pockets it. He stands at the threshold of the manor entrance, camera bag gripped in both hands now. Behind him, his car sits abandoned in the distance. Ahead of him, darkness and that warm orange glow from deep within. He's made his choice.
Panel 2:LJ takes a step forward, ascending the first stone step toward the manor entrance. His silhouette is small against the massive stone architecture. Above him, the arched entryway yawns open like a predator's mouth.
Panel 3:A close-up of the manor's archway entrance. The massive stone pillars frame the darkness beyond. The warm orange glow from the interior windows casts a sickly light across the stone. The entrance is a threshold—between the dying world outside and whatever waits within.
Panel 4:LJ reaches the top of the steps. He stands at the threshold of the archway, one hand reaching toward the darkness beyond. His face is illuminated by the orange glow from within. His expression is resolute but uncertain. This is the point of no return.
Panel 5:The interior of the manor entrance is revealed. It is a vast, shadowed space. Ornate wooden panels line the walls, aged and rotting. A grand staircase spirals upward into darkness. The orange glow emanates from somewhere deeper within—from a doorway or a room beyond. The air seems thick, oppressive, alive with an unseen presence.
Panel 6:A final wide shot showing LJ silhouetted in the manor entrance, the camera still in his hands, his figure framed by the massive stone archway. Behind him, the dying world and the storm clouds. Ahead of him, the darkness and the orange glow. The threshold has been crossed. The hunt has begun. The trap is closing.
Narrator:“He stepped inside. The door closed behind him.”
