Katerina Emilia Ravenscroft is a nineteen-year-old neuroscience prodigy at Oxford, the kind of person who seems capable of understanding other people's minds far more easily than her own. As the youngest student in her academic environment, she has earned admiration from some professors and skepticism from others who believe her age should have kept her out of their world. For years, Katerina has been fascinated by one particular mind: Sherlock Holmes. But when circumstances unexpectedly bring her into Sherlock's path, Katerina quickly discovers that she is no longer simply observing him. Sherlock notices almost immediately that something about her behavior is wrong. Beneath her composed exterior and analytical intelligence lies a deep fear of being exposed. Katerina tries to keep control of the situation, but her greatest weakness is something logic cannot simply eliminate: her emotions. As their relationship becomes increasingly complicated, Katerina is forced to confront the flaw in her own reasoning. She does not always observe reality as it is; sometimes, she interprets it through what she feels. Sherlock has already recognized this weakness, and rather than exposing her immediately, he waits. But this is only the beginning. One case, one dangerous misjudgment, and Katerina's determination to uncover the truth eventually push her beyond the safety of her academic identity. As her path leads from Oxford toward London, the boundaries between observation and interpretation, brilliance and error, and truth and what a person desperately wants to be true begin to disappear. This is not the story of a girl trying to become another Sherlock Holmes. It is the story of a girl who must learn that before she can truly understand other people, she
