Detective Finch

supporting

Detective Finch is a man in his late 40s, a weary but sharp private investigator. He has a tired yet intelligent face, with deep-set grey eyes and short, dark, slightly receding hair. His skin is fair, showing the lines of a hard life. He typically wears a classic noir detective outfit: a dark, well-worn trench coat, a slightly pushed-back fedora, and a practical, dark suit with a vest and tie underneath. His hands are calloused and strong, often seen examining cryptic objects with intense focus.

Panel 1: An establishing shot of a cramped, cluttered private detective's office. Dust motes dance in the single shaft of light piercing through grimy blinds. DESK is covered in stacks of papers, an old typewriter, and a half-empty coffee mug. A worn trench coat hangs on a coat rack.

Panel 2: CLOSE-UP on Detective Finch's hand, calloused and weary, reaching for an unusual, intricately designed BRASS COG with strange symbols etched into its surface. It sits on top of a plain brown envelope labeled 'PRIVATE'.

NARRATION (FINCH, Internal): Another Tuesday. Another mystery. Thought I'd seen 'em all.

Panel 3: Detective Finch, a man in his late 40s with a tired but sharp face, leans back in his creaky chair, holding the Cryptic Cog up to the light. His fedora is pushed back slightly. His eyes are focused, a spark of intrigue igniting.

Detective Finch: This isn't your usual 'missing cat' case... Not even a 'stolen jewels' job. This is... different.

Panel 4: Finch is now standing, shrugging on his trench coat. The office looks smaller, almost claustrophobic around him. He's determined, the weariness briefly forgotten.

Detective Finch: Let's see where this little piece of clockwork wants to take me.

Panel 5: Finch walks down a dimly lit, rain-slicked street. The city's towering, grimy steampunk architecture looms overhead, silhouetted against a perpetually overcast sky. Steam vents hiss from cracks in the pavement. He looks down at a faint glint on the cobblestones.

NARRATION (FINCH, Internal): The cog led me to the Lower Spire district. Not exactly tourist central.

Panel 1: CLOSE-UP on Finch's gloved hand picking up a small, ornate BRASS BOLT from the wet cobblestones. It has a distinctive, almost identical symbol to the Cryptic Cog etched on its head.

Detective Finch: Well, well. Looks like our mystery man, or machine, leaves a trail.

Panel 2: Finch approaches a ramshackle street stall, steam rising from various pots and arcane-looking devices. GRETA, a middle-aged woman with shifty eyes and grease-stained hands, is haggling with an unseen customer. She glances nervously at Finch.

Detective Finch: Afternoon, ma'am. Seen anyone drop this around here?

Panel 3: Greta points a grimy finger down a dark, narrow alleyway, barely visible between two towering, rusted buildings. Her expression is a mix of fear and eagerness to get rid of Finch.

Greta: (Whispering conspiratorially) Yeah, I did. Saw a strange fellow, all cloaked up, drop it heading down there. Looked like he was in a hurry.

Panel 4: Finch ventures into the dark, refuse-strewn alley. The walls are covered in graffiti and grime. He spots a pile of discarded, generic mechanical parts – gears, springs, and wires – glowing faintly in the gloom.

NARRATION (FINCH, Internal): Too easy. Always too easy.

Panel 5: CLOSE-UP on Finch's face, illuminated by the faint glow of a broken streetlamp. He holds up the Brass Bolt next to a discarded, common gear. His expression sours. The symbols don't match, the quality is wrong. He's been fooled.

Detective Finch: A red herring. And a sloppy one at that. Greta, you're going to owe me a new lead.

Panel 1: Finch is back on the main street, leaning against a grimy lamppost, frustrated. He pulls out the Cryptic Cog and the Brass Bolt, examining them again under the dim streetlights, a frown deeply etched on his face.

Detective Finch: She knew I'd follow the obvious. But why? What's the real trail?

Panel 2: CLOSE-UP on the Cryptic Cog in Finch's hand. He notices a tiny, almost invisible scratch on its surface, revealing a sliver of a different, unique metal beneath the brass plating. It looks like polished copper, reflecting light oddly.

NARRATION (FINCH, Internal): The alley was a distraction. The real clue was in my hand all along. A different metal... a different signature.

Panel 3: Finch looks up, scanning the towering, intricate buildings of the district. His gaze settles on an old, disused clock tower, its gears frozen, a faint, rhythmic humming sound now noticeable to him, almost like a pulse, coming from within.

Detective Finch: Copper... and that faint hum... It could only mean one thing. The old Spire Clockworks.

Panel 4: Finch stands before a heavy, rusted metal door leading into the base of the towering Spire Clockworks. Steam hisses from unseen pipes. The rhythmic hum is louder here, almost hypnotic.

NARRATION (FINCH, Internal): Abandoned for decades, they said. Looks like someone forgot to tell the gears.

Panel 5: Inside, Finch navigates a labyrinthine interior of enormous, silent clockwork machinery. Dust motes float in the sparse light. In the distance, a single, bright, pulsating glow can be seen, accompanied by the distinct sound of metallic clanking.

Page 4

Panel 1: Finch rounds a colossal gear, revealing a hidden chamber. The pulsating light source is brighter now, illuminating a complex, active workstation filled with intricate tools, glowing tubes, and half-assembled machinery. The air hums with energy.

Detective Finch: Well, I'll be...

Panel 2: Standing at the workstation, meticulously soldering wires into a large, intricate device (the 'Final Device'), is LUMEN, a Steampunk Robot With A Light Bulb Head. Its body is made of polished brass and copper, with exposed gears and pistons. Its light bulb head glows with a warm, steady light. It turns its head slowly towards Finch, its single 'eye' focusing.

Lumen: Ah, Detective. Right on schedule.

Panel 3: CLOSE-UP on Finch's face, a mixture of shock and bewildered understanding. He holds up the Cryptic Cog, its design mirroring some of the gears on Lumen's body.

Detective Finch: You... you sent the clue? The cog, the bolts... the red herring?

Panel 4: Lumen gestures with a multi-jointed arm towards the 'Final Device' it was working on – a complex, beautiful steampunk mechanism, emitting a soft, steady hum. It looks like a device to stabilize the city's power grid, or perhaps even something more ambitious.

Lumen: Indeed. I required a mind of your caliber to witness my achievement. The city's energy matrix is unstable, Detective. My 'Final Device' will correct it. But I needed an observer, a 'culprit' to bring you here.

Panel 5: Finch stands, still surprised but a faint, amused smile playing on his lips. He looks at Lumen, then at the magnificent 'Final Device'. The mystery is solved, but the truth is far from what he expected.

Detective Finch: A detective, a trail of evidence, a red herring... all for an unveiling. You certainly know how to make an entrance, Lumen.
