▸ MIDNIGHT STAR

Emerald Midnight pt 3

At a high-society gala, Midnight Star and Emerald Essence stand frozen in a now-deserted ballroom, both heroes ensnared by the villainess Desirable's desire spell. Officer Reyes watches helplessly as Desirable claims a rare artifact from the gala's display and makes her escape. Maya struggles desperately to break through to Tamara inside the spell, while Clarissa Barnes drifts deeper into longing alongside Tamara. As the two heroes stand lost in the haze of enchanted desire, the issue ends on a cliffhanger — Desirable gone, the artifact stolen, and both heroes still trapped in the spell.

PAGE 1

Panel 1:Wide shot of an enormous, opulent ballroom — crystal chandeliers hang dark, abandoned tables are scattered with overturned champagne flutes and half-eaten hors d'oeuvres. The room is completely deserted except for Midnight Star and Emerald Essence standing in the center of the open floor, side by side, both upright but slack-shouldered, eyes half-lidded and unfocused. Golden light pulses faintly around Midnight Star; emerald light pulses around Emerald Essence.

Narrator:“The gala had been packed with five hundred guests. Now only two remain — and neither of them knows it.”

Panel 2:Officer Reyes stands near the ballroom's side entrance in her police uniform, black hair pulled back, hand pressed to her earpiece. Her eyes are wide and darting between the two entranced heroes and the far end of the room. Her other hand hovers near her holster but does not draw.

“Officer Reyes: Dispatch, I need backup — gala venue, now.”

Panel 3:At the far end of the ballroom, Desirable — a tall woman in a deep crimson evening gown, her face partially hidden behind a shimmering red-gold masquerade mask — stands before a lit display pedestal. On it sits a fist-sized artifact: a dark stone carved into a spiral, faintly glowing blue. Desirable's gloved hand reaches for it, fingers curling around the artifact.

“Desirable: Right on schedule.”

PAGE 2

Panel 1:Close-up on the artifact cradled in Desirable's gloved hands. The spiral stone pulses with a cold blue inner light, casting blue reflections across Desirable's crimson gown and mask.

Panel 2:Officer Reyes takes three quick strides toward Desirable, arm extended, palm out in a stop gesture. Her expression is fierce. Desirable is visible in the background, already turning away toward the grand double doors, artifact in hand.

“Officer Reyes: Stop! Put it down — you're not leaving.”

Panel 3:Desirable half-turns, one hand pressed to her lips. A shimmer of rose-gold light drifts from her fingertips toward Officer Reyes — not a blast, a gentle wave, like perfume on air. Officer Reyes's stride slows. Her outstretched arm drops a few inches.

“Desirable: Officer. You don't really want to stop me.”

Panel 4:Close-up on Officer Reyes's face. Her eyes are glassy for one second — then she blinks hard, jaw clenching, teeth gritted. Her expression hardens again. She is fighting it.

“Officer Reyes: Not... going to work on me.”

Panel 5:Wide panel. Officer Reyes takes another step — but between her and Desirable, Midnight Star and Emerald Essence stand in the open floor, still glazed and motionless, blocking the direct path. Desirable is already at the grand double doors, hand on the handle, looking back over her shoulder with a calm smile.

“Desirable: Your heroes, on the other hand — they're exactly where I need them.”

PAGE 3

Panel 1:The grand double doors swing shut behind Desirable with a heavy thud. Officer Reyes is left standing alone in the ballroom with the two motionless heroes. She pivots toward them, hands raised helplessly, expression anguished.

“Officer Reyes: No — no, no, no—”

Panel 2:Officer Reyes steps close to Midnight Star, gripping the hero's shoulder and shaking it. Midnight Star's head rolls slightly but her eyes stay distant and unfocused, golden light swirling at the edges of her irises.

“Officer Reyes: Midnight Star! Snap out of it!”

Panel 3:Close-up on Midnight Star's face from Officer Reyes's point of view. Midnight Star's black eye mask frames eyes that are open but seeing something far away — a faint golden shimmer drifts across her irises like heat haze. Her lips are slightly parted.

Panel 4:Officer Reyes steps back, pressing both hands to the sides of her head. She looks from Midnight Star to Emerald Essence and back, expression desperate and calculating. In the background, the empty display pedestal is visible — the artifact gone.

“Officer Reyes: She took the Spiral Stone. And I can't move either of you.”

PAGE 4

Panel 1:Abstract panel — a black void with faint gold circuitry lines running through it, like a dark digital space. In the center, a small bright point of light pulses rapidly, almost frantically. This is Maya's inner-space, her world inside the Midnight Star suit.

Narrator:“Inside the Midnight Star system — Maya.”

Panel 2:The same abstract space. The gold circuitry lines flicker and distort — a thick wave of rose-gold interference rolls through them like a jamming signal, bending and breaking the clean lines. Maya's bright central point dims and wavers under the interference.

“Maya: Tamara. Tamara, listen to me.”

Panel 3:The interference thickens. Maya's light point shrinks further, the circuitry lines fragmenting around it. Static fills the space. Maya's signal is barely a flicker.

“Maya: This spell — it's blocking me. I can barely reach her.”

Panel 4:The bright point pulses harder — once, twice — fighting back against the rose-gold interference. A thin gold line breaks through the static, stretching outward like a reaching hand.

“Maya: Tamara — PLEASE.”

Panel 5:The gold line dissolves before it reaches anything. The static swallows it completely. Silence. Maya's light point hangs alone in the dark, dimmed and still.

Narrator:“The spell held. Maya couldn't get through.”

PAGE 5

Panel 1:Back in the ballroom. Wide shot from above. Midnight Star and Emerald Essence stand in the center of the vast empty floor, the overturned tables and abandoned glasses surrounding them. The double doors are closed. Officer Reyes paces near the side wall, phone pressed to her ear. The two heroes face slightly toward each other without touching.

Narrator:“Whatever world Desirable's spell had built — they were both inside it now.”

Panel 2:Inside the spell — a warm, soft-focus version of the ballroom, but full of light and music that the reader can see only as a visual warmth. Midnight Star stands in this dreamlike version of the room, her posture relaxed, head slightly tilted. The gold of her costume glows warmly. She is not alarmed. She looks content.

Panel 3:In the spell-space, Emerald Essence stands a few feet from Midnight Star. Her red hair catches the warm light. Her green and gold costume shimmers. She looks at Midnight Star with a soft, open expression — not guarded, not heroic, just present and undefended.

Panel 4:Over-the-shoulder shot from behind Midnight Star, looking at Emerald Essence. In the spell-space, Emerald Essence turns her face toward Midnight Star. Their eyes meet. Both heroes are still — but the air between them seems to vibrate with warm rose-gold light.

PAGE 6

Panel 1:Back in the real ballroom. Officer Reyes lowers her phone from her ear, expression grim. She looks at the two heroes — still standing, still glazed — then at the closed double doors. She takes a step toward the heroes, then stops, unsure what to do.

“Officer Reyes: Backup's five minutes out. Five minutes too late.”

Panel 2:Officer Reyes crouches in front of Emerald Essence, waving a hand in front of the hero's eyes. Emerald Essence's green-masked eyes stare straight through her, unblinking, the emerald aura pulsing softly.

“Officer Reyes: Emerald Essence. Can you hear me? Anything?”

Panel 3:Inside the spell-space. Midnight Star takes a slow step closer to Emerald Essence. Her expression is open and unguarded — no tension in her jaw, no heroic alertness, just warmth. Emerald Essence holds her ground, watching her come closer.

Panel 4:Close-up on Midnight Star's face inside the spell-space. Her black eye mask frames eyes that are wide and soft, the gold irises warm. Her lips part slightly as if she is about to speak — or not speak. She looks lost in something vast and good.

Panel 5:Close-up on Emerald Essence's face inside the spell-space. Her green eye mask catches the warm light. Her expression mirrors Midnight Star's — unguarded, open, a longing written plainly across her features. A single tear tracks down her cheek, catching the rose-gold light.

PAGE 7

Panel 1:Inside Maya's digital space. The rose-gold interference still dominates, but Maya's gold light point is burning brighter now — she has gathered herself and is pushing harder. The thin gold line extends again, longer this time, cutting through the static.

“Maya: I am NOT losing her to this thing.”

Panel 2:The gold line strains, bends, almost snaps — and then holds. It stretches further, reaching the edge of the rose-gold interference wall.

“Maya: Tamara — this isn't real. None of it is real.”

Panel 3:Inside the spell-space. The warm golden light flickers — just once, briefly. Midnight Star blinks. Her expression shifts for a fraction of a second: a crease of confusion between her brows, her eyes slightly sharper. Then the warmth floods back and she is lost again.

Panel 4:Back in the real ballroom. Officer Reyes stands upright, watching the two heroes. She notices Midnight Star blink — a tiny movement, the first in minutes. Officer Reyes's eyes go wide. She takes a sharp step forward.

“Officer Reyes: Wait — did she just—”

Panel 5:Wide shot of the real ballroom. The two heroes stand side by side in the center. Officer Reyes is frozen mid-step between them and the exit. The empty pedestal is visible in the background. The room is still, silent, and wrong. Nothing moves.

Narrator:“Desirable was gone. The Spiral Stone was gone. And both heroes were still lost.”

PAGE 8

Panel 1:Inside the spell-space. Midnight Star and Emerald Essence now stand very close together — not touching, but close enough that the gold and emerald auras around them are overlapping, blending into a warm rose-gold between them. Both faces are turned toward each other, open and unguarded.

Panel 2:Inside Maya's digital space. The gold line has punched through the rose-gold interference wall — just barely, just a hair — and now flickers on the other side, weak and thin, like a candle in a storm. Maya's light point is dim, nearly exhausted.

“Maya: Tamara... I'm here. Come back.”

Panel 3:Inside the spell-space. The warm light begins to pulse with a new rhythm — not calm and enveloping, but urgent, insistent. Midnight Star's expression shifts: her brow furrows, her eyes sharpen a fraction. Her hand rises slightly, fingers open, as if reaching for something she cannot see.

Panel 4:Real ballroom. Close-up on Midnight Star's actual face — her eyes, still glazed, but now with a hairline crack of gold light running through the iris. Her lips part. A sound is starting to form — not quite a word yet.

Panel 5:Full-width panel across the bottom of the page. Inside the spell-space, Midnight Star and Emerald Essence stand at the center of the dreamlike ballroom, the rose-gold light at its most beautiful and overwhelming — swirling around both of them in slow, gorgeous arcs. Both heroes' faces are turned toward each other, expressions raw with longing. Neither moves to break it. Neither can. Caption box at the bottom of the panel.

Narrator:“To be continued...”
