The word "strip" covers two different objects, and the difference decides the panel proportions. A newspaper strip is a fixed-width column read on its own, surrounded by unrelated content. It has to be self-contained, so its panels are close to square, its joke resolves inside three or four frames, and nothing above or below it carries meaning. A strip inside a comic book is a tier — one horizontal band of a full page, read in sequence with the tiers above and below. It is not self-contained at all; it is a sentence in a paragraph. That changes the shape. Tiers are wider than they are tall, because a tier has to hold an establishing shot or a two-character conversation without cramping the lettering, and because the reader crosses it left to right in one sweep before dropping to the next. Drawing newspaper-proportioned panels inside a comic-book page is one of the most common beginner mistakes: the page comes out feeling like four unrelated gags stacked on top of each other rather than one continuous scene.
A reader spends time on a panel roughly in proportion to its area, so panel size is the main pacing control you have. The template lays out four tier shapes and each does something specific. Four narrow panels in a tier reads fast — use it for rapid dialogue, a countdown, or a montage where no single moment should land. Three even panels is the neutral default, the tier equivalent of ordinary prose; most conversation happens here. One wide panel slows everything down. It is where an establishing shot goes, or a silent beat just before a turn. Two uneven panels creates tension by implication: the larger one is the one that matters, and the reader understands that without being told. The practical discipline is to decide the tier shapes for a page before you draw anything inside them. Laying out panels after the art exists means the pacing is whatever the drawings happened to need, which is not pacing at all.
Speech balloons hang from the top edge of a panel and are read in the same order as the panels themselves — left to right, top to bottom. Two consequences follow, and both are easier to respect on a wide tier than a square one. First, keep the top third of every panel relatively empty. Art drawn up there will be covered, and beginners routinely put a character's face exactly where the balloon has to go. Second, keep speakers in a consistent left-right order. If character A is left of B, A's balloon must come first; swapping their positions between panels forces the reader to re-parse who is talking. A wide tier gives you horizontal room to separate two speakers cleanly, which is precisely why comic-book tiers are shaped the way they are. Draft the lettering in pencil before you ink, so you know how much space the art actually has.
