▸ How it works

How to make a speech bubble

  1. Pick a bubble type

Choose speech, thought, shout, whisper, caption or a manga-style vertical bubble. Add as many as the panel needs.

  2. Type the line

Write the dialogue in the text box. It wraps inside the bubble and shrinks to fit if the bubble is too small.

  3. Place it and aim the tail

Drag the bubble into position, resize it from the square handle, and drag the round handle so the tail points at the speaker.

  4. Download the PNG

Add your own picture as a background, or leave it empty for a transparent PNG you can drop into any comic, slide or meme.

▸ Lettering conventions

Which bubble to use

In comics, the shape of a balloon tells the reader how a line is said before they read a word.

Speech

The plain oval with a pointed tail is ordinary talk. The tail points at the speaker's mouth and stops just short of it.

Thought

A cloud with a trail of small circles is a thought nobody else in the scene can hear. The circles lead to the thinker's head.

Shout

A spiky burst is a shout, an alarm or a sudden shock. Use it once in a scene; if every line shouts, nothing does.

Whisper

A dashed outline is a whisper or a line spoken under the breath. The broken border reads as a quieter voice.

Caption

A box with no tail is a caption: narration, a time jump ("Later…") or a place name. It has no speaker, so it has no tail.

Manga vertical

Manga letters Japanese text in tall, narrow balloons that read top to bottom, with columns running right to left. This option lays your text out that way.

Three placement rules

  • Reading order: the first line spoken in a panel goes highest and furthest left; the reply sits lower and to the right. Manga reverses this and reads right to left.
  • Tails never cross. If two tails would cross, swap the balloons or move the speakers.
  • Keep a balloon to about 25 words and a panel to two or three balloons, so the words never cover the picture.

▸ Questions

Speech bubble maker FAQ

Is the speech bubble maker free?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark. It runs entirely in your browser, so there is nothing to install.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. A background image is opened by your browser on your own device, and the PNG is drawn there too. Nothing is sent to ComicInk or anyone else.

Can I download a speech bubble with a transparent background?

Yes. Leave the background empty and the downloaded PNG is transparent everywhere outside the bubbles, ready to place over a comic panel, a photo or a slide.

Can I make manga speech bubbles?

Yes. The Manga vertical bubble writes the text top to bottom in columns that run right to left, the way Japanese manga is lettered. It works best for Japanese, Chinese or Korean text.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. You can drag bubbles, the resize handle and the tail with a finger. On a computer you can also select a bubble with Tab and nudge it with the arrow keys.

Which font does it use?

You can letter in Bangers, a comic capitals face, or Inter, a clean sans-serif. The text wraps inside the bubble and shrinks to fit if the bubble is too small.

Can ComicInk add speech bubbles to a comic automatically?

Yes. ComicInk's AI comic maker draws each page with the dialogue lettered in speech bubbles and the narration in caption boxes, in any of 22 languages. That part needs a free account, and new accounts start with 100 credits.
