Chibi Style Comics

Chibi is a deliberate distortion of proportion for emotional effect. A chibi figure runs roughly two to four heads tall against a realistic seven or eight, with the head enlarged, the eyes enlarged further, and the limbs shortened and simplified almost to mittens. The effect is not merely cuteness but disarmament — the proportions are borrowed from infancy, and readers respond to them accordingly. In Japanese comics chibi is frequently used as a register shift rather than a whole style: a character drops into chibi form for one panel of comic outrage and returns to normal proportion immediately afterward, which is a joke the medium can make and prose cannot. Used throughout, it suits comedy, all-ages stories and merchandise-adjacent work.
