About the Vintage/Retro tradition
Retro comic art reproduces the look of mid-century printing, including its limitations. Colour came from a four-plate process with a restricted palette, applied as halftone dots at a coarse enough screen that the dots are visible; misregistration left colour slightly offset from the black line; and cheap absorbent newsprint muted everything and yellowed with age. None of that was a style choice at the time — it was the cost floor. It reads as warm and nostalgic now precisely because it is obsolete, and reproducing it means deliberately reintroducing artefacts that printers spent decades trying to eliminate. The drawing underneath tends to match the era too: simpler anatomy, bolder staging, generous caption boxes, and dialogue that carries more of the load than a modern comic would allow.
